Aphasia is like a prison, but new research offers hope of escape.

What is Aphasia like?
You could hold all the wisdom and knowledge of the ancients but not be able to communicate it. Reminds us of the episode of Stargate where Col. Jack O'Neill's encounter with a device shows its handiwork when he begins to loose touch with nouns in his own language.

049-1

Imagine you're in a foreign country where learning the language is incredibly hard, if not impossible.

In mild cases, you can tell a person all about an object but not be able to recall its name, something as simple as a "toaster" or "hamburger"; things you have had the word for most of your life. Imagine what it would be like losing nouns out of your vocabulary.

Or in a worst case scenario, as a result of  severe injury, no one understands what you're saying. You can't comprehend a word unless people use gestures. The best you can do is point and gesture, and hope the other person understands what you're trying to get across.

You're now in a position to better understand what a person suffering from aphasia goes through on a daily basis. Aphasia affects the production or comprehension of speech, be it verbal or written.

People with mild cases can blend in easily with the world, the only clue a verbal miscue here or there. But those with severe cases can find themselves completely alienated from everyone.

The worst part is, cognition is not affected. People think as clearly as they ever did. They simply can't communicate. And that's a message health experts will be conveying during June, National Aphasia Awareness Month.

Remote viewing training may help. Remote viewing concentrates on describing items without giving it a name. With any new and repeated activity, new circuits are created in the brain. This may help at an unconscious level, building a new way to address topics and give those who suffer from aphasia additional tools to help communicate.

Additionally, if a person tells you they are afflicted with Aphasia, there are some things you can do. First of all, avoid talking to them like a 2 year old.  Ask if they have problems speaking words or understanding them or both.  When a strange look comes upon their face, try rephrasing using the words in context as you would with any other adult. Hand gestures can help.

ASL (American Sign Language) often uses descriptions of things and people to identify them just as Aphasia sufferers do.  It would be interesting to see a study on Aphasia sufferers who used ASL as a second language before the word problems arose. Would they encounter less problems? Perhaps ASL could open new doors for communication and also new friends and new communities.

They saw a strange being and they all held their breath, then showed they were human by beating it to death. They were children.

jar-jar

Ok so the title is a spoof, but the context is very real and should be considered when dealing with things that are unfamiliar to us. What you are looking at in the photo is an as yet unidentified creature of some sort.

The discovery of a strange creature in Cerro Azul, Panama has sparked controversy among the population. While some say it may be a being from another planet, others simply believe that it is an animal. The incident attracted the attention of the Panama military, Zoologists and even some wildlife experts from the National Environmental Authority in Panama.

Four teenagers aged between 14 and 16 years, met him at the Jet Blue Hill, on Saturday, while having fun in the place. According to one of them, they suddenly saw the creature emerging from a cave, it looked at them and started towards one of them. As the creature approached, the boys became frightened and began to throw rocks and sticks at it until it was dead, after which they ran to inform the authorities and come back to take photos.

Canal 4 TV in Panama showed the local armed military assisting investigators and wildlife experts from the National Environmental Authority in Panama. Although furry and too slow, the closest animal to resemble this creature is a sloth. Ironically a sloth which died in the area a day before was skinned and brought in at the site for comparison (the strange creature had no fur but had a similar claw) but they were still unable to identify the creature.

Melquiades Ramos, wildlife expert of the National Environmental Authority said "we are investigating the case of the strange creature found in Cerro Azul,  since it's features are very unique, we need to dig deeper."

The Debates:

Theory: Sloth.
Some think that the creature is a sloth despite the fact that experts could not identify it. It wouldn't be the first time professional educated authorities made a  big mistake. From the kid's point of view its a bit absurd though. Think about how that sounds; a group of boys spent all their allowance on shaving cream and a few dozen razors to shave sloth and then figured out how to give it a strange head and think they are going to fool the gun carrying authorities.

Theory: Unknown Species.
Is it possible that some form of genetic mutation from the sloth family managed to happen via air or toxic pollutants? Have we discovered some new form of species that has managed to remain hidden for ages and also survive the ravages of time only to die at the hands for frightened kids? Possibly the last remaining of its species gone at the hand of ignorance.

Theory: Alien
Some people insist on thinking that this is not an animal. Is it possible that an intelligent creature similar to Jar Jar Binks from Star Wars could exist? If so, this raises many questions about the way we raise our children to respond to the unknown. In this story, out of ignorance, the teenagers became afraid and decided to kill or destroy what they did not understand.

If this is the way Earth children react, imagine how aliens may think human adults would act. No wonder the media is full reports of aliens who are only showing themselves to isolated people with lousy cameras.   Those friendly aliens many people talk about wanting to meet are probably all scared!

Summary Question:
The next time you are faced with someone or an idea that seems alien to you, what will you do? More importantly, what will children learn to do by watching you?

May 25th is the  "annual Star Wars fan holiday". It was originally pushed by fans to begin on May 25, 2007, the 30th anniversary of the release of the original Star Wars film.

Universal Day of the Jedi has been envisioned as a celebration of the entire saga, and fandom itself. The first Universal Day of the Jedi, on May 25, 2007, coincided with Celebration IV. The primary purpose of C4 as it is commonly abbreviated, was to celebrate the 30th anniversay of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.  The first celebration was held May 24-28, 2007 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  May 24 was exclusively for members of Hyperspace, the Official Star Wars Fan Club.

From Wookieepedia:

The idea for Universal Day of the Jedi originated in 2006 as news and rumors began surfacing about how Lucasfilm could be planning to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Wars in 2007. The concept was first proposed by Greg Davies (former webmaster of fan site Shadow of the Sith) in an article posted on his website.

Universal Day of the JediThe topics and storylines of the Star Wars saga continue to impact several generations around the world in profound ways. Underneath the veil of a series of sci-fi plots, the viewer is asked to look at their world with new eyes and look within to their own morals, beliefs and prejudice.

Greg Davies, webmaster of the Universal Day of the Jedi website states:

I believe I would not be alone in the Star Wars fan world by stating that the films had an immense impact on me as a child. Who would have foreseen that the love for the movies would continue into adulthood? It is the genius of Lucas that interwove elements of myth and legend, spiritual questioning, and morals forming life lessons, into the plot of Star Wars.

Join us in chat or in the forums to discuss your favorite Jedi topics.  Many of you may have gone with a full regalia to celebrate the occasion, and we invite you to share your photos and videos with all the members of Project Jedi.

Universal Day of the Jedi can be found on MySpace, Twitter and Facebook.

"In a rescue worthy of the Mutant Ninja Turtles, five Sydney ninjas went to the aid of a commuter as he was being robbed of his mobile phone in a Sydney alleyway.

The 27-year-old German medical student had been confronted by three thugs as he sat alone on a late-night train to Kingswood, in Sydney's western suburbs on Wednesday night.

He refused to hand over his wallet when they demanded it, but they followed him off the train and saw their chance when he turned into the dimly lit alley.

But their assault was brought to a sudden stop when they looked up from kicking their victim and saw the ninjas, dressed completely in black, running toward them.

If they had looked a bit more carefully as they trailed the student into the alley, they might have noticed that the spot where they had chosen to launch their attack was right outside the doors of the Ninja Senshi Ryu school, a Japanese martial arts school that trains would be ninja warriors.

Even worse for the hapless muggers, a class happened to be in progress at the time. It was being taught by a sensei, or teacher, of 30 years experience in the specialised warrior art of Ninjutsu, an ancient martial art focusing on stealth, pressure points and weaponry.

The class was coming to an end when a ninjitsu student went outside and saw the attack on the student, who was coming to the end of an eight week exchange visit. Rushing back to class, he called on black belt instructor Kaylan Soto and three other students for help.

"He's called out to me, 'Sensei, someone's getting mugged on the road outside!'" said Mr Soto ."We looked around to see what was happening and there were three blokes on this guy just kicking him and punching him in the head.

"We started running at them, yelling and everything. These guys have turned around and seen five ninjas in black ninja uniforms running towards them. They just bolted," he said.

"You should have seen their faces when they saw us in ninja gear coming towards them. I've never seen guys running that fast. They should have been in the Olympics - they would have won gold," he added.

Ninja student Steve Ashley said: "It was probably the worst place in Sydney where they could have taken him."

The muggers got away with the student's mobile phone and iPod. Sydney police said they have charged a 16-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man with robbery. The third attacker is still on the run."
